Tamiya Mini 4WD Report - 5/16/2024 Dukwho Workshop
Dukwho Workshop Mini 4WD Race Report - 5/16/2024
The Tamiya crew showed up for an evening of fun and Mini 4WD racing at Dukwho Workshop in Fullerton, CA. The track was fun but a bit more twisty than usual. It was littered with corners but, thankfully, very few elevated areas and jumps. One reason for this ground-hugging configuration was the addition of the Exflowly vs Rayvolf competition, a class that pitted those two cars against each other for a 'Team Battle' event. This replaced the standard Box Stock class for the evening. The other, however, classes stayed in the evening's rotation - Basic, Tuned and BMax.
The Tamiya attendees for the evening were as follows: Gary Demory, Craig Kaplan and Tony Phalen. Honoree Tamiya members were Ken Gerberding and David Pisarski. All five of us were participating in the 'vs' class, however not all of us would enter the other classes. It's a long night sometimes and, well, we're old and we get tired HA!
Exflowly vs Rayvolf
This class was basically a Box Stock class, however you would use ANY Box Stock rollers on the car. Teams were easy - just pick the one you wanted to be on and build your car! David, Tony and Ken went with the Rayvolf while Gary and Craig went Team Exflowly. Both cars are bascially the same - it was a matter of tuning your rollers for best track performance.
All 5 of us chose slightly different roller setups. The fast car of the bunch, however, was Tony's Rayvolf - it had some serious speed and hugged the track well, especially the crossover (that was biting alot of drivers with the wrong roller setup). In the end, Tony would make it to the finals and with some strategic battery charging, speed away from the competition to bring home the win. Congrats - that car looks like it might be an amazing Box Stock candidate!!!
Basic Class
All 5 of the group members entered the Basic Class as it's an easy step up from Box Stock. There's a mixture of cars entered - FM-A, MA, AR and a couple VZ setups. The boys were testing and tuning in practice, all 5 coming up with something they thought might progress to the finals for a chance at the win. Unfortunately, Tony was the only one to get a car to the finals and, wow, what a final it was. He played it a little safe, managing the battery charge to make the car quick but also not overpowered. On the final lap of the 3-lap race, the leader was out front by a couple feet but, in the second-to-the-last corner on that final lap, his over-powered car would bounce out, leaving Tony alone on the track to finish the lap and take the win! Luck was on his side tonite - a double-win evening.
That, however, that was the end of the lucky streak for Team Tamiya - no one advanced in Tuned and, while Craig, Gary, Tony and David did score some points in BMax, it wasn't enough to advance to the finals. Sometimes you win some, some times you go home early.
Well, that about wraps up this week's Race Report. We'll be back at the track again Thursday for some more Mini 4WD Racing!
SEE YOU NEXT WEEK!
